Scoring Points

February 14, 2024

For my entertainment dollar

Is usually when I hear a comedian

Who has spent their career

Either starting or a lifetime

Crafting context within content

Of throwing verbal footballs

To an audience of wide receivers

Displaying linguistic courage

Of standing alone on a stage

“If you want to tell people the truth,
make them laugh. Otherwise, they’ll kill you.”

― Oscar Wilde

Using his or her brain to effectively

Widen the recipients’ understanding

Of themselves and the world around

Drop their defenses to giggle or guffaw

At the absurdities of this existence

That upon a full thorough examination

Would have the strongest of the strong

Curled up in a withering fetal position

Begging and screaming for it to end

“Laughter is a priceless medicine that has so much power to heal and compensate. Laughter is good for the soul because it brings people together, releases tension in the environment and relaxes your nerves making it both beneficial for emotional as well as physical well-being. Laughter is the best way to improve your mood and there is no better alter than a laugh to bring balance to your life.”

Laughter is such a remedy that it is even mentioned in the BIBLE in Proverbs 17:22

A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones

“Comics are supposed to worry about dying, you know? I don’t want to die out there, man. Jeez, I was dying. It was death out there. Like a morgue.

On the other hand, if he succeeds – if he makes you laugh – he can say, “I killed ’em! Knocked ’em dead!” Why is there so much violence mixed up with comedy, you know, which should be so much fun?

It’s all dying and bombing. He bombed. Or else he was a riot! (makes ‘riot’ noise) A real scream! AAAAUGH! I cracked up laughing! He broke me up, too. I busted a gut laughing! My friend was in stitches! He fractures me with his punch lines…and his GAGS! (makes gagging sound)

Slapstick! Knee-slapping! Side-splitting! Rib-splitting! Gut-busting! Laugh….I thought I’d die.

– George Carlin

There is no need to jump up and down screaming endlessly and mindlessly at the fourth wall, pretending to self that it is going to change the outcome one iota. No money to be lost or gained, just quenching an internal and eternal thirst for a deep and loving understanding.

“Just the idea that the expression “Making Fun” could ever be a negative.

You shouldn’t “Make Fun”………what?

I’m sorry, did I take some subjects that are ugly and dark and soul lacerating, painful, shitty, maybe unavoidable in life kinda stuff and I made it “fun”.

What a dick, I must be. I can’t believe, just for attempting that Herculean feat of making awful shit, “fun”.

It’s what you have to do, in life, is try to make fun. If you know how life works. It starts out where you’re born into being fed a hard diet of, lies and fantasies and fabrications and then that just turns into a series of disappointments.

As you start to figure out everything you know is wrong, and then you get to live in the failures one after another and tragedies that are just waiting in the bushes to jump up and bite you in the fucking thigh and then at best, it ends with you on a cold slab in a medical university with hungover teenagers throwing around your internal organs waving your fucking dead wang at each other and laughing and that is the best that can happen.

So in the meantime, you better try and make that shit fun.”

– Doug Stanhope

“People who see life as anything more than pure entertainment are missing the point.”

– George Carlin
