Humanity Needs A Mascot
Like Iron Maiden’s “Eddie”
According to Bruce Dickinson
In his book
“What Does This Button Do?”
(Am paraphrasing since I
Listened to the audio book)
What keeps the band together
Through petty squabbles and
Major riffs (guitar pun, mine)
What carries them forward
Through tough times is “Eddie”
Their macabre metal mascot
Being a greater purpose to
In the end, always getting along
As a combined unit of unity
With slight variations and a few deaths
“Eddie” is greater than the sum of their parts
Same could work for humanity
Not the invisible one that already
Has eight billion interpretations
Which causes so much death because
Everyone has a different perspective
That their version is the best and if
Only all, could be guided “their’s”
Everything would be hunky dory
For the briefest moment
“A moment is coming. Almost here. Its getting closer… any moment now, almost here aaaaaaand now its gone.”
– George Carlin
Literally, for the briefest moment
The photograph of the earth itself
Dawned a realization, this is our home
That we ought to care of it and
Each other born of its Gaia consciousness
But unlike “Eddie,” that image did not adapt
To new evolving phases (albums)
Seventeen in nearly fifty years
Each member, either side of 70 years old
The image stayed the same
So the inhabitants got bored quickly
Discarded the image through apathy
Although now, when viewed again
The overpopulated metro areas
Look like a cancer growth on its host
“Southwick in his Chapter 15 excerpt Human Populations introduces a very interesting analogy between the human population and cancer cells.”
“Other scientists consider human population growth ‘an ecopathological process’ that is out of control and injuring the earth. In this sense, such population growth in some parts of the world is carcinogenic, a ‘cancer-like growth’ with the potential of destroying the global ecosystem.”

Where can we find that “Eddie” like mascot to help us evolve and grow whilst still getting along without fighting over the mascot?
“Shadows in the stars
We will not return
Humanity won’t save us
At the speed of light
Shadows in the stars
We will not return
Humanity won’t save us
At the speed of light
We slip into the night”
“The Speed Of Light”
– Iron Maiden
“Just an observation,
Maybe I need
Different glasses.”
– Angelo Devlin
