The Absolute Absurdity
Goes easily unquestioned
Of any election scenario
Whether it be for student council
Sheriff, dog catcher, judge
Representative, senator, clerk of the recorder
President “The most powerful man in the world”*
Or the one that gets me every time
Is coroner. What? How am I possibly supposed
To be qualified to select a person whose
Job it is to oversee the lives of dead people?
Because none of it is based
On merit, qualifications, or skill
Merely popularity, name recognition from
Billboards, yard signs, bumper stickers
Mailers, flyers, on cute colorful cardboard
Effort, money, and time to become known
Promises do not need to be kept
Facts matter not for those
Not paying any discerning attention
Save cursory surface satisfaction
That the well-intentioned promise
Was either that or the opposition
Forces were too difficult to overcome
Making it “other’s” fault it did not occur
“Can’t” possibly mean that it was stated
Emphatically, “just” to get elected…. Ooopsie
So, the game goes on and on
The cliché recycles, this next election
Will be the most important election of your life
Hmmmm, based on the frivolity of facts
The inconsistencies of erroneous information
The desperate desire for devious democracy
In the gambler’s hope, the outcome will
Change one’s life immediately for the good
Sadly, nothing will change except the
Names and faces of the “democratically” elected
Which is oddly all fine and dandy since each day
Regardless of external circumstances, one can
Still be kind, helpful, generous, sharing, smile
Take care of immediate family, then extended, to
People you barely know, strangers, acquaintances
Knowing we are all in this together as one
Regardless of who is allegedly running the circus
“Be it the Devil or be it him
You can count on just one thing
When the time is up you’ll know
Not just one power runs the show”
“Fate’s Warning”
– Iron Maiden
When the best options are between
Dumb and dumber
Older and oldest
Criminal and war criminal
One can only wonder why
Apathy runs rampant
“Working people have been fucked over so long in this country, those are the kind of decisions they’re left to make.”
– George Carlin
The best and the brightest
Are not going to run for office
They are too smart and have
Too many morals and standards
To be compromised so quickly
“I ascribe to Mark Twain’s theory that the last person who should be President is the one who wants it the most.
The one who should be picked is the one who should be dragged kicking and screaming into the White House.”
– Bill Hicks
* Could we collectively stop this ruse
“The most powerful man in the world”
Is not the President of the United States
The most powerful people are
(Not in any particular order)
Good parents, teachers, philosophers,
Comedians, lyricists, musicians and poets
Can pretty much guarantee the above
Short list of your lifelong influencers
Are in one of those categories and
Not some schmuck in a very “white” house
“If voting made any difference they wouldn’t let us do it.”
― Mark Twain
If whoever gets elected to the presidency
Doesn’t immediately assist to stop all wars
End the proliferation of the military industrial complex
Make sure all are housed, fed and healed
Then they are merely a pliable plastic puppet
To do the bidding of the multinational
Corporations who put them there in the first place
“I write to expunge the darkness so
That someday light may shine through”
– Angelo Devlin
