On One Hand
What happens in Vegas
Stays in Vegas
On the other hand
What happens in Vegas
Spreads like a virus
Of 24 hour non stop
Gluttonous consumption
At infinite inflation on
All products and services
Jacking them up to new highs
Taking that attitude home with them
(If it sells for $5, sell it for $7
Or two for $ 13.99 or $14
Should you decide to donate
That .O1 cent to “charity”
Better yet to spend that
Good money on bad entertainment
For 10 minutes at a time for $10
Make that $20, got to keep people
Transferring the wealth to the wealthy
Heck, if they were at a table
Or a digital one-armed bandit
They might “win” money back
At the casino of crass consumerism
Once the corporations get that dollar
It is theirs to keep, no refunds)
With nary a reset to pause
Save in the wee hours
Where things slow a tad
In order to restock rubbish
Amidst the wailing sirens
Flashing lights, bad smells
Backup beeps of garbage trucks
Gathered crowds whilst
Stepping over passed out people
Dodging the mist of Marijuana
Every square inch
Capitalizing on consumption
All corridors between the registration
To your room are filled with restaurants
Machines, tables, gift shops, liquor stores
With automated “Jetson’s” style
Futuristic food dispensers
Need a slice of pizza at the
Cost of a whole pizza
Wait (heaven forbid) 90 seconds
Need a slice of cake
Just whip out that plastic
On a machine without a price
After all, you are now drunk and hungry
Or having had too much, don’t worry
You can “rent” concentrated oxygen to
Cure the bought and paid for hangover
Tip: drinking in moderation doesn’t cause hangovers
Never mind that…..Every square inch is hell bent on
Capitalizing on consumption
If you are awake but asleep, you are consuming
At exorbitant prices that make no sense, save being
A captive audience with shitty transportation options
On the third hand, and a much more positive note
It appeared as though all of the human races
Were all getting along and intermingling happily
Too drunk or stoned to remember their prejudices
Unfortunately, when not seeking financial gain
Through some oddless luck of the draw
They were buying some useless shit that if
For not being in Vegas would never buy ever
Let alone a “souvenir” cup they just threw out
I wonder with the music blaring so loud
From every corner inside and outside
If they were to loop a Nirvana song reflecting
That their mind and wallet are being violated
That anyone would stop and go home
“Rape Me”
“Rape me
Rape me, my friend
Rape me
Rape me again
I’m not the only one, ah-ah
I’m not the only one, ah-ah
I’m not the only one, ah-ah
I’m not the only one
Hate me
Do it and do it again
Waste me
Rape me, my friend
I’m not the only one, ah-ah
I’m not the only one, ah-ah
I’m not the only one, ah-ah
I’m not the only one. “
– Nirvana
My guess is probably not
There is a “chance” they might go home rich
Having arrived in a $20,000.⁰⁰ car and
Going home in a $200,000.⁰⁰ Greyhound bus
“I write to expunge the darkness so
That someday light may shine through”
– Angelo Devlin
Brilliant insight. It’s amazing how so much of the time we just go along with the way things are and then when you step back and just look at what’s really happening with fresh eyes, it’s rather astonishing, either in a good way (like life is so miraculous) or as you say here, in a horrible perversion. Like, would we really choose any of that if we were truly paying attention? Thanks for always opening the eyes!
