Images Portrayed
Of symbolistic strength
Flags, guns and crosses
Waved, depicted and stuck
As vinyl stickers on trucks
Reveal weaknesses
Concealed in shame
Of lost Individuality
Grazing as weak sheep
On a barren field since
The shepherd abandoned
A following flock that was
Never his to begin with
Distracted with the promise
Of a better field if only they
Could have made him
Their simpleton shepherd
Good for him they didn’t
He had no field for them
Still, like a lazer beam
To a rambunctious cat
They will paw and claw
At the nothingness of
Permanent distraction
Clinging to their fake
Symbols of strength
Flags, guns and crosses
Waved, depicted and stuck
As vinyl stickers on trucks
“I consider them to be symbols and I leave symbols to the symbol minded.”
– George Carlin
O God of Earth and Altar,
Bow down and hear our cry,
Our earthly rulers falter,
Our people drift and die,
The walls of gold entomb us,
The swords of scorn divide,
Take not thy thunder from us,
Take away our pride.”
[G.K. Chesterton: English Hymnal]
