An Old Song Parody
Written (I think before Blogs were available) 1/16/2003

Of an even older song. Harry Chapin’s “The Rock”
Just to show I’m not always picking on the current goofball.
“My problem, is with ha huh “authority” – Lewis Black
“IRAQ” best sung to Harry Chapin’s “The Rock”
Iraq is gonna get wise us, he woke with a start
As the price of oil goes up, the dark fear hits his heart
And Bush told us of the vision, which he was sure he’d seen
We said: “Go back to sleep Dubya, you’re having a bad dream!”
Silly child–
Everybody knows Iraq has oil underground
Everybody knows why alternate sources won’t be found
Remember George Bush Sr. said the sky was falling down
Well nothing ever came of that, the world still whirls around
Iraq’s going to stop selling to us. He stood and told the masses
The sheep driving to their slaughter, stopped to pump some gases
But he went on and said; “I’ve seen it, I don’t want you to blame me
There’s nothing else we can do, here’s my partner in crime dick Cheney
Crazy boy–
Everybody knows Iraq sits over the oil
Everybody knows our greed won’t allow it to spoil
We’ve more important studies than your fantasies and fears
You know that Iraq’s been controlled by us for at least a hundred years
“Iraq’s not going to put up with this.” He told the VP he was certain
“If we can start a war soon enough, they’ll forget about Halliburton”
You see my dad did all the research; I’ll blame it on Osama
We’ll tell them danger is lurking, were here to protect their mama
Just a madman–
Everybody knows their civil rights will soon be gone
Everybody knows being controlled by others is wrong
Everybody knows of those who say the end is near
Everybody knows that life goes on as usual round here
He went up to the United Nations, a building left alone
They knew he was insane so they left him drone and drone
He’d given up enlisting help for there was no one else
He spent his days devising ways to engage Iraq himself
One night while he was working lying to himself and the rest
The peace movement began to swell and came up to a crest.
Iraq won’t succumb to us; I know that to be the deal.
If you don’t trust me, you can always ask Rumsfield
The aware stopped this fake president, the plans they did foil
We are tired of spilling blood, while you make profits from oil
The people ran into the street even though they thought it would be hard
They decided to make the regime change sitting in there own back yard
When someone asked where dubya had gone they said: They weren’t too soft
He is sitting in a prison, with his other partner in crime John Ashcroft
But some where in his cell
Oh the lies that he do tell
And if we are not very carefull
He will give us another earful
Okay, here is Harry Chapin’s version of
.“The Rock”
The rock is gonna fall on us, he woke with a start
And he ran to his mother, the fear dark in his heart
And he told her of the vision that he was sure he’d seen
She said: “Go back to sleep son, you’re having a bad dream!”
Silly child–
Everybody knows the rock leans over the town
Everybody knows that it won’t tumble to the ground
Remember Chicken Little said the sky was falling down
Well nothing ever came of that, the world still whirls around
“The rock is gonna fall on us,” he stood and told the class
The professor put his chalk down and peered out through his glasses
But he went on and said; “I’ve seen it, high up on the hill
If it doesn’t fall this year then very soon it will!”
Crazy boy–
Everybody knows the rock leans over the town
Everybody knows that it won’t tumble to the ground
We’ve more important studies than your fantasies and fears
You know that rock’s been perched up there for a hundred thousand years
“The rock is gonna fall on us.” He told the magistrates
“I believe that we can stop it but the time is getting late
You see I’ve done all the research my plans are all complete.”
He was showing them contingencies when they showed him to the street
Just a madman–
Everybody knows the rock leans over the town
Everybody knows that it won’t tumble to the ground
Everybody knows of those who say the end is near
Everybody knows that life goes on as usual round here
He went up on the mountain beside the giant stone
They knew he was insane so they left him alone
He’d given up enlisting help for there was no one else
He spent his days devising ways to stop the rock himself
One night while he was working building braces on the ledge
The ground began to rumble the rock trembled on the edge
“The rock is gonna fall on us! Run or you’ll all be crushed!”
And indeed the rock was moving, crumbling all to dust
He ran under it with one last hope that he could add a prop
And as he disappeared the rock came to a stop
The people ran into the street but by then all was still
The rock seemed where it always was or where it always will be
When someone asked where he had gone they said: “Oh he was daft.
Who cares about that crazy fool.” And then they’d start to laugh
But high up on the mountain
When the wind is hitting it
If you’re watching very closely
The rock slips a little bit
