Uninvited
“Until they become conscious, they will never rebel, and until after they have rebeled, they can not become conscious.”
“Winston Smith”
.
– George Orwell “1984”

“Uninvited”
Yet stays as a permanent guest
Technology and surveillance is
Inviting everyone’s big brother
Into their home only to have him
Watch you pay for their telescreens
On in every room on every wall
Well established at airports
Encroaching at gas station pumps
Sports bars and restaurants
Fast food joints and supermarkets
In your hands or on your lap
.
“The people will not revolt. They will not look up from their screens long enough to notice what is happening.”
– George Orwell “1984”
“The little ones sit by their TV screens
No thoughts to think
No tears to cry
All sucked dry
Down to the very last breath
//
And somewhere out there in the stars
A keen-eyed look-out
Spied a flickering light
Our last hurrah
And when they found our shadows
Grouped ’round the TV sets
They ran down every lead
They repeated every test
They checked out all the data in their lists
And then the alien anthropologists
Admitted they were still perplexed
But on eliminating every other reason
For our sad demise
They logged the only explanation left
This species has amused itself to death
No tears to cry
No feelings left
This species has amused itself to death
Amused itself to death
.
