Shrugging Atlas
One word at a time
Taking the weight
Of the world
Off of my shoulders
Because it is not
The way it ought to be
Or could be
I know that
You know that
Bill Hicks knew that
“Here’s what we can do to change the world, right now, to a better ride. Take all that money that we spend on weapons and defenses each year and instead spend it feeding and clothing and educating the poor of the world, which it would many times over, not one human being excluded, and we could explore space, together, both inner and outer, forever, in peace.”
.
– Bill Hicks
Nope
Nothing written here
Will change anything
One iota at all
“The table is tilted, folks.
The game is rigged and
Nobody seems to notice.
Nobody seems to care.”
– George Carlin
Save for my further
Necessary detachment
Of shrugging atlas
“A world of difference
A world so out of touch
Overwhelmed by everything
But wanting more so much
//
A world of indifference
Heads and hearts too full
Careless of the consequence
Of constant push and pull”
“Kid Gloves”
– Rush
After all, one is not
Separate from the world
There is no
Atlas to shrug
The “outer” world
Is a mirror
To see what’s inside
As ugly as it is
Or perhaps beautiful
It is repeated ad nauseam
That the earth is
4.5 billion years old
That’s a little vague and
Has not changed
Each year, year after year
Plus it is based on
A heliocentric calculation
That is man made
Based on the specific sphere
In an outer band of stars
In an infinite number of galaxies
In an always existing cosmos that
We are all desperately clinging to
While expeditiously destroying
Because it doesn’t fit in with
Our worldview of being connected
To everything invisibly connected
Seems to be the neighborhood
Kid’s sandbox that no matter how
Much we ruin it, once we go home
It is no longer our responsibility
“I left no litter behind.
That’s your problem.
I’m treating this planet like
The fucking rental car that it
Is, and I’m turning it in
Trashed with a bumper hanging
Off, fuck your insurance, fuck
The environment,
I didn’t ask to
Be here.
Someone created me.
Yes, I know that’s a selfish
Thing.
It’s a selfish thing.
But you know what?
I’ve cared about other stuff,
And, yeah, me not caring about
Stuff, will, affect it as much
As me caring about stuff,
Which, is none.”
– Doug Stanhope
There, I shrugged a tiny bit of Atlas
Feeling a couple hundred words lighter
Plus the comedian’s quotes
Always lighten the load a little more.
“Just an observation,
Maybe I need
Different glasses.”
– Angelo Devlin
